If I Was Your Rat

If I was your rat, would you tear through my iron cage and set me on the bones of your perfect shoulder

If I was your rat, would you turn the lights out just to see my hopeful eyes that lie in the prisms of daylight, or would you lock the cage with a vengeful smile and let me stare through the wires that separate me from you

If I was your rat, would you shield my heart from the people who gasp when they see my cutting teeth, or would you hold me up in exaltation and say that I am truth… I see the world from an angle that you all pretend not to know, but ultimately know too well

If I was your rat, would I still be your pet, or just a soul you could manipulate with fingers.  Would you manipulate my tail through your hands in slow motion while you blind fold me with optimism, because I feel like crawling to you across the carpet of suggestive behavior

If I was your rat, would you make me lunch, or would you dance on the river’s edge and come home with snakes in your pockets.  Do you like that water before you, because I’m not sure I know how to swim

If I was your rat, would you build me a coffin with the very hands I hope to sleep in, because then maybe the pounding of the nail won’t seem so final

If I was your rat, I would build up the walls that keep you using only my mouth and sweat. I would sit in your lap, and stare up at the sticks while you feel the luster that makes me your rat.
